Golubac Fortress

After exploring the captivating sites in the Balkan Mountains, we will head to Belgrade, Serbia’s vibrant heart. To avoid retracing our steps, we plan to return to Belgrade via the stunning Iron Gates Canyon along the Danube. On the way, we’ll stop at Golubac Fortress, which guards the canyon’s western entrance. This fortress, one of the most picturesque along the Danube, takes its name from Hungarian origins. Built in the 14th century, it features ten towers. Its strategic location at the mouth of the canyon not only controlled river traffic but also marked the narrowest and most perilous part of the river, enhancing its importance.

The fortress has been restored and now serves as a museum. It includes a well-designed visitor center and a scenic garden along the riverbank, making it an ideal place to pause and take photos on the way from Negotin to Belgrade. In the early 15th century, the site witnessed fierce battles between the Ottomans and the Hungarians, who vied for control over this crucial point.
