Krušedol Monastery

South of Novi Sad lies a low mountain region called Fruška Gora, which became the center of Serbian monastic life starting in the 18th century, following the great migrations from Kosovo. The mountain is home to around twenty monasteries, some dating back to the 12th–15th centuries. The most prominent among them is Krušedol Monastery, which is featured on the Serbian 5-dinar banknote. It is the burial site of Patriarch Arsenije III (known as the “Serbian Moses”), King Milan I (who reigned in the late 19th century), the wife of King Miloš, and other notable figures. Nestled in the forest, the monastery exudes a serene and peaceful atmosphere.

Krušedol Monastery was founded in the early 16th century by the Branković family, descendants of the last Serbian despot, Đurađ Branković, who died in 1456. It was intended to serve as the family mausoleum and a repository for its treasures and library. The founders were Saint Angelina of Serbia and her son, Saint Maxim Branković. Angelina was married to Stefan Branković, a deposed Serbian ruler who briefly reigned in 1459 before going into exile following the Ottoman conquest. Her son, who once held the title of King of Serbia, renounced his royal status to establish the monastery and devote his life to spiritual pursuits.

Following the Ottoman conquest of Belgrade in 1521, Krušedol Monastery became a focal point of resistance, as both Hungarians and Serbs clashed with the Ottomans in the surrounding region. The veneration of the Branković family members buried at the site played a significant role in inspiring the local population to remain steadfast in defending their homeland.

At the heart of the monastery complex stands a large church built in the Moravian style with Baroque elements. It is surrounded by a square formation of monastic buildings, echoing the design of Morava Valley monasteries, though here the layout is square rather than circular. The monastery has undergone multiple renovations over the centuries and features beautiful frescoes, stained-glass windows, a library, and a treasury containing holy icons and relics. The most striking building in the complex, in my opinion, is the red-painted gatehouse at the entrance.
