Përmet

Beyond the mountain range that encloses the Gjirokastra Valley to the northeast, there is another valley with several wonderful sites called the Valley of Permet. Southern Albania is characterized by pointed mountain ranges and fertile valleys between them. Permet is a small town located on the banks of the Vyosa River, known for its sweets, wine, and raki. The most striking thing in Permet is a huge rock situated in the middle of the river, and the massive mountains that rise on both sides of the valley.

Three-quarters of the population of Permet are Bektashi. In the upper part of the city, there is a tekke founded by a Bektashi Baba about 100 years ago. He is buried next to Haji Baba of Khorasan, who died 350 years ago.

Not far from it are hot springs called Benja, and canyons with flowing water. At the entrance to the canyon with the springs, there is a beautiful Ottoman bridge called Kadiut Bridge.

On the mountains overlooking Permet, on the way to the Osumi Canyon, at the top of a mountain, is one of the most beautiful tekkes of the Bektashis, called Tekke Baba Aliut. It is a place of visitation and pilgrimage in the heart of Bektashi land. There are new buildings and a staircase that climbs to a tomb at the top of a mountain with a wonderful view, and it can be reached by a good dirt road, a twenty-minute drive from Permet.
